Naming Conventions: camelCase vs. snake_case
Naming conventions are the fastest readability win in a codebase. camelCase (userAccountId) is idiomatic for variables and functions in JavaScript, TypeScript, Java and Swift. PascalCase (UserAccount) marks classes, React components and types. snake_case (user_account_id) dominates Python, Ruby and SQL column names, and it is also the safest choice for environment-adjacent keys because underscores survive shells and config parsers.
kebab-case (user-account) belongs in URLs, CSS class names and file names — search engines treat hyphens as word separators while underscores can be read as a single token, which matters for SEO on slugs. SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE is reserved for constants and environment variables.
Pick one convention per layer and enforce it with a linter rather than review comments. Mixed casing is where subtle bugs hide, especially when serialising between a snake_case API and a camelCase client.
