How to Optimize Your Text Length for Blogs and Social Media
Text length is a practical ranking and engagement lever. Blog posts that fully answer a search intent usually land between 1,200 and 2,000 words, long enough to cover subtopics without padding. Landing pages convert better closer to 400–700 words, where every sentence supports a single action. Meta titles should stay near 60 characters and meta descriptions under 160 so search engines display them without truncation.
Social platforms are stricter. X posts perform best around 70–100 characters, LinkedIn updates around 150–200 words before the “see more” fold, and Instagram captions front-load the hook in the first 125 characters. Email subject lines should stay under 50 characters for mobile inboxes. Use the reading-time estimate above (based on 200 words per minute) to keep newsletters near a two- to four-minute read, which is where completion rates usually peak. Count first, then trim anything that does not advance the argument.
