CPM versus CPC versus CPA for Media Buyers
CPM is the cost of one thousand ad impressions: total cost divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000. It is the native currency of awareness buying — display, video, out-of-home and most programmatic inventory — because it prices reach rather than response.
CPC prices a click, shifting delivery risk to the platform, and suits traffic and consideration campaigns. CPA prices a completed action and is the safest model for the advertiser, which is why it carries the highest unit cost and usually requires conversion volume before an algorithm will optimise toward it. The three are convertible: a $5 CPM at a 1% click-through rate implies a $0.50 CPC, and at a 5% landing-page conversion rate that becomes a $10 CPA.
Media buyers use CPM to sanity-check whether the auction is expensive or the creative is underperforming. Rising CPMs with steady click-through usually means competition or audience fatigue; flat CPMs with falling click-through points at creative. Plan budgets by working backwards from the impressions your reach and frequency goals require.
