Modern Favicon Standards and Browser Icon Rules
A favicon is the small icon browsers show in tabs, bookmarks, history entries and home-screen shortcuts. Modern sites need more than one file: a 16×16 and 32×32 PNG for browser tabs and retina tabs, a 180×180 apple-touch-icon for iOS home screens, and 192×192 plus 512×512 PNGs referenced from a web app manifest for Android and installable progressive web apps. A legacy favicon.ico at the site root is still worth shipping because some crawlers and older clients request it directly.
Design for the smallest size first. A logo that reads beautifully on a business card turns into a grey smudge at 16 pixels, so strip fine detail, drop the wordmark and keep a single high-contrast shape. Test on both light and dark browser chrome — a dark monogram on a transparent background vanishes in dark mode, which is why a solid or rounded coloured plate often works better than transparency.
Reference the icons explicitly in your document head rather than relying on root discovery, and remember that browsers cache favicons aggressively. After replacing an icon, add a version query string or expect the old one to linger for days. Serve the files from the site root, keep them small, and make sure the manifest lists the same PNGs so an installed app icon matches the tab icon.
