Extracting Brand Palettes and Checking Accessible Contrast

Rebuilding a palette from a screenshot, a photograph or a legacy brand asset is a routine design task. Sampling directly from the pixels gives you the true values rather than an approximation, which matters when you are matching an existing logo, recreating a style guide that was never documented, or pulling a colour scheme out of a product photograph for a landing page.

A workable interface palette needs more than a list of pretty colours. Pick one dominant colour for surfaces, one accent for actions, and neutrals for text and borders, then check every text-on-background pair for contrast. WCAG AA requires a 4.5:1 ratio for body text and 3:1 for large text or interface components; AAA raises that to 7:1. Mid-tone brand colours frequently fail against white, which is why most design systems darken the brand hue specifically for text use.

HEX is the standard for CSS and design tools, RGB is useful for canvas and programmatic manipulation, and converting to HSL makes it easy to generate tints and shades by adjusting lightness while keeping hue and saturation locked. All extraction here runs in the browser, so client artwork never leaves your machine.

Pixels are sampled across the whole image and grouped into colour buckets; the five largest buckets are averaged to produce representative HEX values.
