From Cicero to Modern Wireframes
Lorem ipsum is not nonsense invented by typesetters. It is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. The familiar opening — “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” — is a fragment of “dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet”, a passage on pain and pleasure. Printers have used the corrupted version as filler since the 1500s because its letter distribution resembles real prose without being readable.
That unreadability is the point. Placeholder copy lets stakeholders judge typography, line length, hierarchy and rhythm without getting distracted by wording. Aim for 50–75 characters per line in body text, and generate enough paragraphs to test how a layout behaves when content overflows.
Replace dummy text with real copy before usability testing, though: people respond very differently to genuine content, and lorem ipsum can hide problems that only surface with real headline lengths.
