Why Readability Improves SEO Metrics and Audience Retention

The Flesch reading ease formula scores text from 0 to 100 using two inputs: average words per sentence and average syllables per word. Higher is easier. Scores of 60 to 70 correspond to plain English an eighth- or ninth-grade reader handles comfortably, which is where most successful web content, product copy and email newsletters sit. The companion Flesch-Kincaid score reports the same analysis as a US school grade level.

Readability is not a direct ranking factor, but it drives the behaviour that search engines measure. Dense paragraphs and 40-word sentences increase bounce rate, cut time on page and reduce scroll depth — all signals that a result failed to satisfy intent. Clearer copy also converts better, because a reader who understands the offer on the first pass does not need a second one.

To raise a low score, split long sentences at conjunctions, replace multi-syllable abstractions with concrete words, cut filler qualifiers, and break walls of text with subheadings and lists. Keep specialised terminology where your audience expects it — a technical readership tolerates a lower score than a consumer one.
