Character Limits, Formatting and Image Ratios That Drive Engagement

Every network truncates differently, and the cut-off decides whether people tap through. Twitter/X caps standard posts at 280 characters. LinkedIn allows 3,000 but collapses after roughly 140–210 characters behind a “see more” link. Facebook technically permits over 60,000 characters yet hides everything past about 480. In practice your first two lines are the entire advert for the rest of the post.

Formatting for skimming beats formatting for prose. Lead with the outcome or the tension, break the body into single-sentence lines with real line breaks, and keep hashtags to three or fewer — high hashtag counts correlate with lower reach on professional networks. Put links in the post body on LinkedIn only when the link is the point; otherwise reach tends to favour native content.

Image dimensions decide whether your card looks deliberate or broken. A 1.91:1 landscape image at 1200×630 pixels is the safe default for link previews across all three platforms, 1:1 squares perform well in mobile feeds, and 4:5 portrait occupies the most vertical space on phones. Always preview before publishing: a headline that fits on desktop can clip badly on a 375-pixel-wide screen.

Frequently asked questions

Twitter/X allows 280 characters for standard accounts, LinkedIn 3,000, and Facebook over 60,000 — but all three truncate the visible portion far earlier in the feed.
