Vector SVG vs Raster PNG in Modern Interface Design

SVG stores a drawing as mathematical instructions — paths, shapes, fills and strokes — so it renders perfectly at any size, stays tiny for icons and logos, and can be styled or animated with CSS. PNG stores a fixed grid of pixels, which means it has a resolution ceiling but is universally supported and always renders identically regardless of fonts, filters or CSS context.

You still need PNG in plenty of places. Email clients strip or block SVG, most social platforms reject it for avatars and Open Graph previews, app store listings and favicons demand fixed pixel sizes, and design handoffs to print or slide decks expect raster files. Exporting a PNG from your existing SVG keeps a single vector source of truth while satisfying those requirements.

Export at 2× or 3× the display size so the result stays sharp on retina and high-DPI screens, and remember that PNG preserves the transparent background of your SVG. If the source uses a web font, convert text to outlines before exporting — the canvas renderer may not have that font available and will substitute a fallback.
