Handling UTC and Unix Epochs in Software
A Unix timestamp counts the seconds elapsed since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC, ignoring leap seconds. Because it is a single integer with no timezone attached, it is unambiguous — which is exactly why backend systems should store it (or an ISO-8601 UTC string) rather than local time.
The rule that prevents most date bugs: store in UTC, transmit in UTC, convert only at the presentation layer. Rendering with the browser's own timezone via Intl.DateTimeFormat keeps daylight-saving transitions correct without hard-coded offsets, which drift twice a year in most regions.
Watch the units. JavaScript's Date.now() returns milliseconds while most APIs and databases return seconds — a factor of 1,000 that silently produces dates in 1970 or in the far future. Also note the year-2038 problem: signed 32-bit timestamps overflow on 19 January 2038, so use 64-bit integers for anything long-lived.
