URI Query Parameters, Percent-Encoding Rules and Request Safety
URLs may only contain a restricted set of ASCII characters. Everything else — spaces, accented letters, emoji, ampersands inside a value — must be percent-encoded, meaning each byte is written as a % followed by two hexadecimal digits. A space becomes %20, an ampersand becomes %26, and a UTF-8 character can expand to several escape sequences.
The distinction that trips people up is component versus full-URI encoding. Component mode escapes reserved characters such as &, ?, =, / and #, which is what you need when injecting a value into a query string: an unescaped ampersand inside a parameter silently splits it into two parameters and breaks tracking, search filters and redirect targets. Full-URI mode preserves those structural characters so an entire address stays usable. Decoding is equally valuable when reading analytics reports, server logs or OAuth callback URLs, where nested redirect targets are often double-encoded. Everything here runs locally in your browser, so tokens and internal URLs are never transmitted.
Frequently asked questions
Component mode uses encodeURIComponent and escapes reserved characters like & ? = / — use it for query-string values. Full-URI mode uses encodeURI and preserves URL structure.
